The Yavapai College District Governing Board (DGB) approved a College budget of $85 million for the fiscal year that starts July 1, 2013 at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 11 on the Yavapai College Prescott Campus. The five-member DGB, which is comprised of elected Yavapai County residents from five districts, is responsible for governing on behalf of and is accountable to Yavapai County taxpayers. Board members Dr. Dale Fitzner, Herald Harrington, Dr. Patricia McCarver, Robert Oliphant and Ray Sigafoos (Board Chair) were present at the meeting.
The FY14 budget is $7.4 million more than the FY13 budget, due mainly to an increase in capital spending to renovate on-campus student housing. The operating portion ($45 million) of the overall budget is lower than the FY10 operating budget.
Other actions included:
The Board approved an extension of College President Dr. Penny Wills’s contract through June 30, 2016. The Board also approved a 5 percent salary increase and a $5,000 expense budget increase for the president. “Dr. Wills is a great president, and we want to keep her here,” said board spokesperson Herald Harrington. “The pay increase reflects the outstanding performance of the institution and the outstanding performance of the president.” Harrington cited the excellent evaluation that the College received during its recent accreditation review as an example of how well the College is fulfilling its mission.
Steve Walker, vice president of development, reported that the College is partnering with county economic development organizations to establish a Regional Economic Development Department (REDD) that will be housed at the College. The College has begun advertising to hire a director of the REDD.
The College is installing a new electronic message board on Sheldon St. near the front entrance of the Prescott campus. The sign will be used to inform the community about campus activities, shows at the College’s Performing Arts Center, educational opportunities, etc. Also, new signage is being erected on Hwy. 89A in the Verde Valley to direct people to the College’s Verde Valley campus, 601 Black Hills Drive in Clarkdale.
Barbara Wing, a retired former Yavapai College dean, will be the interim dean of instruction and student services beginning July 2 until a replacement can be hired for Dr. Greg Gillespie, who has accepted a new job as president of Ventura Community College in Ventura, Calif.
The Board’s next regular meeting is Tuesday, August 6, 2013, 1 p.m. at the College’s Career & Technical Education Center (CTEC), Room 144, 220 Ruger Road near the Prescott Airport.
